Rodent
Marmota monax
Marmota monax, commonly known as the woodchuck or groundhog, is a large, diurnal rodent belonging to the family Sciuridae. Adults typically weigh 2-6 kg and measure 40-65 cm in length, with a short, bushy tail. They have grizzled reddish-brown fur, stocky bodies, and short, powerful limbs adapted for digging. Woodchucks are true hibernators, slowing their metabolic rate significantly during colder months. They breed in early spring, typically March-April, producing a single litter of 2-6 young after a gestation period of 31-32 days. Young are weaned at 5-6 weeks and disperse in early summer. Their average lifespan in the wild is 3-6 years.
Woodchucks are primarily herbivorous, feeding on a wide variety of grasses, clover, alfalfa, garden vegetables, and fruits. They are solitary animals, except during breeding season or when raising young. Known for their extensive burrow systems, they are adept diggers, creating complex tunnels with multiple entrances, often including a main entrance with a large dirt mound and several inconspicuous 'plunge holes' for escape. Their digging activities can cause significant damage to building foundations, agricultural fields, and landscape features. When alarmed, they emit a sharp whistle, earning them the name 'whistle-pig.' They are wary and quickly retreat to their burrows when threatened.
Woodchucks prefer open woodlands, pastures, fields, and the edges of forests, particularly areas with well-drained soil suitable for burrowing and abundant vegetation for food. They often establish burrows along fencerows, under sheds, beneath porches, near foundations, or within dense thickets. Their burrows can extend up to 15 meters in length and descend 1.5 meters deep, capable of undermining structural integrity. Conducive conditions include accessible open spaces with ample herbaceous vegetation for foraging and areas where digging is unimpeded. Poorly maintained foundations, elevated sheds, and dense landscaping provide ideal attractants and harborage for these burrowing rodents.
