Merchant Grain Beetle
Oryzaephilus mercator
Biology
A slender flattened 2.5–3 mm brown beetle with six saw-like teeth on each side of the pronotum, nearly identical to the sawtoothed grain beetle but with larger eyes and a narrower triangular head. Females lay up to 300 eggs and a generation takes 30–50 days.
Behaviour
Unlike its sawtoothed relative it favours oilseed products — nuts, seeds, cereals with high oil content, chocolate and pet food. Adults fly, which spreads infestations across a facility faster than the sawtoothed grain beetle does.
Habits
Typical of pantries, pet food stores, bakeries and warehouses handling nuts and oilseeds. Its very flat body lets it enter packaging through tiny gaps and seams, so intact packages are no guarantee. Warm, undisturbed shelving supports the fastest build-up.
