Arachnid
Leiobunum vittatum
Leiobunum vittatum is an opilionid, not a true spider. It has a single oval body segment and extremely long, thread-like legs. Adults are 3–5 mm in body length but much larger in leg span. They lack venom and silk glands entirely.
Harvestmen are nocturnal scavengers and opportunistic predators of small insects, mites, and decaying matter. They gather in damp, sheltered areas and are often seen in groups. They do not bite or sting and are harmless to people.
They become noticeable in basements, crawlspaces, garages, and gardens during late summer and fall. Their long legs and clustering behaviour can alarm residents, but they are incidental invaders that do not damage structures or fabrics.
