American Badger (Taxidea taxus)

Mammal

American Badger

Taxidea taxus

Moderate Risk

Biology

Taxidea taxus is a stocky, low-slung mustelid with distinctive black and white facial stripes, grizzled gray-brown fur, and long foreclaws adapted for digging. Adults weigh 6–11 kg and are powerful excavators.

Behaviour

American badgers are solitary, nocturnal burrowers that prey on rodents, rabbits, snakes, and insects. They dig rapidly and can create extensive burrow systems under decks, foundations, roadsides, and agricultural fields.

Habits

Damage includes large dirt mounds, undermined structures, torn turf, and hazards to livestock that step into burrows. They are generally not aggressive but will defend themselves if cornered or threatened.

Control methods

  1. 1Inspect for active burrows before exclusion
  2. 2Install buried wire mesh or concrete skirts around decks and foundations
  3. 3Remove rodent prey populations to reduce attraction
  4. 4Use one-way doors to evict badgers from under structures
  5. 5Secure garbage and pet food that may attract prey animals
  6. 6Contact wildlife professionals for trapping where permitted

IPM Procedure Checklist

View full procedure
Step 1

Inspection

  • Survey interior and exterior for evidence and conducive conditions
  • Document findings with photos and a site map
  • Place monitors to confirm activity
Step 2

Identification

  • Confirm American Badger (Taxidea taxus) — not a look-alike
  • Note life stage and risk level: Moderate
  • Capture clear photos and samples for the record
Step 3

Action Thresholds

  • Trigger action when monitor counts trend up
  • Re-evaluate weekly during active season
  • Document trigger criteria in the IPM plan
Step 4

Prevention

  • Exclude entry points and harborage
  • Improve sanitation and moisture control
  • Modify habitat around the structure
Step 5

Control Methods

  • Inspect for active burrows before exclusion
  • Install buried wire mesh or concrete skirts around decks and foundations
  • Remove rodent prey populations to reduce attraction
  • Use one-way doors to evict badgers from under structures
Step 6

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Service monitors on schedule and trend captures
  • Re-inspect for American Badger activity at follow-up
  • Adjust tactics based on data; report findings to client
